Suppression of information can have deadly consequences
In a discussion with reporters at the State Department on Tuesday, Secretary Mike Pompeo was critical of China for censoring information surrounding the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus.
He applauded foreign journalists who have been expelled from China, then said, “Had China permitted its own and foreign journalists and medical personnel to speak and investigate freely, Chinese officials and other nations would have been far better prepared to address the challenge.”
He also expressed the deep concern the U.S. has over information that important details may have been suppressed by the Iranian regime regarding the outbreak in that country, stating added, “As of yesterday afternoon, Iran was second only to China in coronavirus deaths.”
“Our priority is to protect the homeland. We’ve imposed prudent travel restrictions and strong travel advisories to slow the spread of the virus to the United States. All known American carriers of the coronavirus are in isolation and treatment,” he continued.
On Monday, President Trump sent a $1.5 billion emergency budget request to Congress to provide additional resources to combat the virus.
Meanwhile, a genetic engineering company based in Houston claims to have finished developing a vaccine to counter the coronavirus and is moving to animal testing with the FDA.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 2,000 people have died globally and more than 75,000 have been infected.
